6 Things You Should Never Do To Your Hot Tub

If you’re a hot tub owner, a spa can be a fun and eventful place for your household, but it may also introduce a variety of problems that you would least expect. Staying on top of these issues is no small feat.

Your water chemistry, for example, can be a tricky task on its own, but tools such as the pHin smart monitor do a great job in updating you on the health of your hot tub. Below you’ll find a collection of things you shouldn't do with your hot tub, to ensure your safety and make your hot tub last for years to come.

Don’t turn off the power with a hot tub full of water.

If you use your hot tub regularly, it’s more efficient to have your hot tub maintain a steady temperature rather than letting it cool between each use. This is especially useful during winter but applies to warmer months too.

Don’t get into the hot tub if the water is green

If your tub has a weird smell or is flowing with foam, that is a definite sign that it holds dirty and unsanitary water. Drain, refill and introduce a start-up procedure for adding water care products.

Don’t cover your tub with plastic

Whether from a plastic cover or a greenhouse setup, plastic magnifies the sun’s rays and traps heat, which can cause the cover insulation to melt.

Don’t raise the temperature above 104° F.

All new hot tubs have a max temperature of 104° F. Any higher than that becomes too dangerous for casual users, so if for some reason yours can reach that temperature, you’ll want to inspect your current settings or replace your entire hot tub.

Don’t put foam, shampoo or bubbles in the hot tub.

Adding soaps and suds can cause some expensive damage to your hot tub. You should also rinse off in the shower before using your hot tub, as it doesn’t drain and filter water as regularly as your bathtub.

Don’t Forget Your Filters.

Be sure to clean your filters every 2-3 months, even if you aren’t using your hot tub, and replace them every 2 - 2 ½ years. You’ll also need to change your silver ion cartridge every 4 months for a cleaner, more efficient hot tub.

If you want to ensure you, your pool or your hot tub continue to stay healthy, keep it balanced with pHin. It constantly monitors your water and tells your smartphone what you need to do to keep the water in your pool and your hot tub healthy.
