Does Your Family Have Pool Rules? 7 Tips for Pool Safety

According to the Centers for Disease Control (CDC), over 3,500 people drown every year in non-boating related incidents. Around 20 percent of those deaths are children under the age of 14. What’s more, for every child who drowns, another five receive emergency treatment for nonfatal water injuries, many of which result on brain damage and long-term disabilities.

It doesn’t have to be that way. Keep swim time fun time and help protect your family and other swimmers with consistently enforced pool rules and simple safety measures.

1. Keep the Pool Secure

No matter how close an eye you keep on little ones, the reality is that nobody can monitor a child 24/7. To protect children and others, erect barriers around your pool and hot tub.

Your best bet is a minimum 4-foot high fence or similar barrier (or whatever the local Health & Safety codes are in your area) that completely surrounds your pool, preferably one with a self-closing, self-latching gate. Also consider a pool alarm that alerts you whenever someone enters the pool, and a safety cover for when not in use.

You should also use a safety cover on your hot tub. Removing steps or ladders also enhances hot tub safety.

Finally, make it more difficult for kids to get into the backyard unattended in the first place by installing childproof locks on the backdoor.

2. Never Leave Children Unsupervised around Water

Never let children swim or even play in the backyard unsupervised. With younger children, there should always be an adult within arm’s reach. 3. Stay Away from Drains

Children swimming or playing near drains and suction outlets are susceptible to injury, so teach them to maintain a safe distance from drains. 4. Teach Everyone How to Swim

5. Learn CPR and Basic First Aid

Learning CPR saves lives around the pool and even away from it. If an accident happens, speed is key; having someone poolside who has CPR training significantly increases the odds of survival. Check with local hospitals, the Red Cross, or your community center for CPR classes. If you already have CPR certification, keep it current.

6. Establish and Enforce Pool Rules

Come up with pool safety rules, make sure everyone knows what they are, and then enforce them. Take your cue from a public pool and create a sign to hang near the pool to remind swimmers what the rules are.

Some rules to include:

  • No swimming alone
  • No diving in the shallow end (or no diving period if the entire pool is shallow, such as a game pool)
  • No running
  • Stay away from drain covers
  • Stay hydrated
